The regular season is running out of Fridays, and the stakes are only getting higher across Western Pennsylvania.
Week 8 brings intriguing matchups in several classifications, including an explosive offensive challenge for Neshannock, a chance for New Castle to rebound, and a major test for an undefeated Penn-Trafford squad.
Keystone Clutch Sports breaks down five games worth watching and the questions that could decide them.
1. Neshannock vs. North Catholic
Thursday, October 15 | 7 p.m. | F.N.B. Stadium, Pittsburgh
This matchup presents one of the week’s most interesting contrasts.
Neshannock is coming off a 27-8 victory over Beaver Falls in which its defense forced four turnovers and held the Tigers to five first downs.
North Catholic, meanwhile, just received an extraordinary performance from running back Anthony Greene, who rushed for 272 yards and six touchdowns on only 17 carries against Deer Lakes.
The matchup to watch: Neshannock’s run defense vs. Anthony Greene.
Greene’s explosiveness means a single missed fit or poor tackling angle could turn into six points.
For Neshannock, the challenge is maintaining gap discipline, setting the edge, and forcing North Catholic to sustain drives rather than surrendering explosive runs.
For North Catholic, establishing Greene early could open opportunities elsewhere in the offense.
Keystone Clutch Question: Can Neshannock’s defense follow its four-takeaway performance by containing one of the WPIAL’s hottest running backs?
2. New Castle at Mars
Friday, October 16 | 7 p.m.
Both programs enter Week 8 looking to respond to difficult losses.
New Castle fell 26-21 to Montour after holding a halftime lead, while Mars surrendered an early 17-point advantage in a 30-24 loss to Blackhawk.
New Castle quarterback Marino Graham has demonstrated big-play ability, and running back Jermaine Walker rushed for more than 200 yards and four touchdowns against Blackhawk earlier this month.
The Red Hurricanes have weapons capable of stressing a defense both vertically and on the ground.
The matchup to watch: New Castle’s offensive balance vs. Mars’ defensive adjustments.
If New Castle can establish its running game, the Hurricanes may find favorable opportunities for Graham and the passing attack.
Mars, meanwhile, needs to limit the explosive plays that helped Blackhawk erase its early lead.
Keystone Clutch Question: Which team responds better after a frustrating Week 7?
3. Central Valley at Blackhawk
Friday, October 16 | 7 p.m.
Blackhawk’s comeback against Mars was one of Week 7’s most dramatic performances.
After falling behind 17-0, the Cougars rallied for a 30-24 victory, highlighted by Ryan Prisuta’s 32-yard touchdown catch and 80-yard touchdown run.
Now Blackhawk returns home to face Central Valley in another Parkway Conference contest.
The Warriors are coming off a 47-7 loss to McKeesport and will be looking for a much stronger performance.
The matchup to watch: Blackhawk’s explosive rushing attack vs. Central Valley’s front seven.
Blackhawk has demonstrated that it can create points quickly on the ground. Central Valley’s defense must tackle consistently and prevent short gains from becoming long touchdowns.
Keystone Clutch Question: Can Blackhawk carry its comeback momentum into another conference victory?
4. Gateway at Penn-Trafford
Friday, October 16 | 7:30 p.m. | Warrior Stadium, Harrison City
Penn-Trafford enters the week unbeaten after a 42-7 victory over Fox Chapel.
Quarterback Ben Grabowski completed 13 of 18 passes for 234 yards and two touchdowns in that game, adding another score on the ground.
Gateway presents another conference challenge for a Penn-Trafford team that has been efficient and productive offensively.
The matchup to watch: Penn-Trafford’s passing efficiency vs. Gateway’s coverage.
Grabowski’s ability to distribute the football and avoid turnovers has been an important part of the Warriors’ success.
Gateway’s best opportunity may come from disrupting passing windows, generating pressure, and forcing Penn-Trafford into longer third-down situations.
Keystone Clutch Question: Can Penn-Trafford protect its unbeaten record as the postseason approaches?
5. Peters Township vs. West Allegheny
Friday, October 16 | 7 p.m.
West Allegheny enters this matchup with momentum after defeating Thomas Jefferson 24-17.
Defensive standout Brodie Cornell recorded nine tackles and two interceptions, including a game-sealing pick in the end zone.
Peters Township, meanwhile, is coming off a 14-3 loss to Trinity and will be looking to get its offense back on track.
The matchup to watch: Peters Township’s offense vs. West Allegheny’s opportunistic defense.
Cornell’s Week 7 performance showed how quickly West Allegheny can turn a defensive possession into a momentum swing.
Peters Township will need to protect the football and finish drives to avoid giving West Allegheny similar opportunities.
Keystone Clutch Question: Will West Allegheny’s defense deliver another game-changing performance?
Keystone Clutch’s Game of the Week
A defense that just forced four turnovers against an offense featuring a running back coming off six touchdowns?
That’s a matchup worth watching.
Neshannock’s defensive discipline and tackling will be tested, while North Catholic gets an opportunity to show that its explosive rushing performance can translate against another quality opponent.
The Keystone Clutch Takeaway
Week 8 isn’t simply about which teams have the most talent.
It’s about adjustments, execution, and how programs respond to adversity.
New Castle and Mars are trying to bounce back. Blackhawk wants to build on a dramatic comeback. Penn-Trafford is protecting an unbeaten record. Neshannock faces an explosive offensive threat.
Five matchups. Five different storylines. One increasingly important stretch of the WPIAL season.
Big Moments, Big Pressure, Big Performance.
